明智光秀が主君の織田信長を討った「本能寺の変」について、林原美術館（岡山市北区）が所蔵する「石谷家（いしがいけ）文書」に土佐の長（宗我部元親（ちょうそかべもよちか）が光秀の腹心に宛てて四国攻めに苦悩する書状があったことが２３日、明らかになった。
変の要因には諸説あるが、長宗我部との関係を重んじた光秀が四国攻めを回避するため決起した可能性を示す史料として大きな論議を呼びそうだ。
石谷家文書は、美濃国（岐阜県）の武将・石谷光政・頼辰（よりとき）父子の書状などで構成され、天正年間を中心とした３巻４７通。同美術館と岡山県立博物館（岡山市北区）の共同研究で、本能寺の変直前の天正１０（１５８２）年５月２１日付で元親が光秀の側近、斎藤利三（としみつ）に宛てた書状が見つかった。

同博物館の内池英樹学芸課主幹は「この発見で５０点程度だった四国説が８０点までになり、他説に比べ一歩抜きんでた」と話している。
