アジア最大級望遠鏡 １月にも搬入 岡山浅口市鴨方町
完成すればアジア最大級となる口径３・８メートル光学赤外線反射望遠鏡の仮設置場所を視察するため、プロジェクトのリーダーを務める京都大大学院の長田哲也教授が９日、浅口市鴨方町本庄の現地を訪問。望遠鏡を収容する仮設ドームの建設状況を確認し、２０１５年１月にも本体の搬入を始める方針を示した。
仮設置場所は、国立天文台岡山天体物理観測所近くにある浅口市立岡山天文博物館の駐車場。屋根と壁面を開閉できるテント張りの仮設ドーム（幅１７メートル、奥行き１２メートル、高さ１０メートル）は１１月に着工してほぼ完成、名古屋大などで本体や部品を保管している望遠鏡を搬入するばかりとなっている。
長田教授は外観や構造を視察した上で「ここは大気の状態が安定し、晴天率も高い。太陽系外惑星の直接観測などに向け、第一歩が踏み出せる」と強調。１５年１月にも望遠鏡の搬入を始め、３月末までに組み立てる考えを示し「１５年度中の試験観測を目指したい」と述べた。
望遠鏡の設置は京都、名古屋大、国立天文台などが計画し、１８枚の分割鏡を用いた主鏡など新技術を多数採用。本来の建設予定地は駐車場の北東約５０メートルだが、望遠鏡を収容する本体ドームなどの建設予算がまだ国から認められておらず、施設の完成、本格観測は来年度以降になる見通し。
